The Circumcision Registry of Aram Soba

Search for children who were circumcised between the years 1863-1945 in the city of Aleppo.

The World Center for the Heritage of the Jews of Aram Tsova is honored to present the record titled “Community Ministry of the Interior for the Jews of Aleppo,” a list of circumcisions of Aleppo Jews, spanning from 1863 to 1945, along with their corresponding dates. This record pertains to the book of circumcisions maintained by the mohels in Aleppo, where they meticulously documented, in semi-cursive handwriting, the names of all infants circumcised between 1868 and 1945 in the city of Aleppo. The lists have been transcribed by the center into modern Hebrew script, with the Gregorian date added alongside the Hebrew date.

Semi-cursive (Arabic: “Nus-Alam”) is a fluid form of Spanish script (also referred to as semi-cursive writing or “Nus-Alam” in Arabic). This early cursive handwriting style, which evolved from square script (print letters), was widely used by Jews in Eastern countries until the aliyah to Israel.

Visitors to the website may utilize our search engine, specifically designed for this purpose, to locate individuals’ names in the circumcision records.

A sophisticated search system has been developed for this purpose and is currently undergoing updates. “We are diligently working to expand the database. It is possible that the name you are searching for may not be available at this stage. A notice regarding future updates will be published alongside the updates.”

We are making every effort to update and enhance the Aleppo Circumcision Registry on the website, ensuring that it is both more accurate and up-to-date. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and patience as we continue to improve this resource.

We express our gratitude to Mr. Moshe Abadi Z”L for providing copies of the original book of circumcisions.
